The Guru will now preview the rest of the NL. Scroll below if you are looking for the Giants v. Dodgers preview.
-------------------------------
[ASTROS v. METS]
This series has some interesting plots. The winner will have a tough matchup in the NLCS. This is a tough series for the Guru to lay a prediction on. But that's why they pay me the big bucks.
The Astros reached the playoffs in the 1st season under new management. You thought Giants/Dodgers had good pitching? Nobody in baseball matches up to the Stros' on the mound. Webb, Oswalt, and Peavy all have ERA's under 1.00 and are all good enough to be aces. It is almost unfair but credit Astros management for getting those guys on the same team. They traded away Rivera but Lidge has been pretty solid minus a shaky outing or two.
The Astros have one of the best hitting teams in the majors. Loretta has been a nice surprise along with Matsui and Jackson. Josh Hamilton, Hanley Ramirez, and Upton have been doing what they do best, crushing the baseball. Hamilton's 10HR's and 20RBI's could lead to some intentional walks in crucial situations.
On the Mets side, Eddy has done it again. Time and time again he gets his Mets to the playoffs when it seems like it may not be possible. Minus Johan Santana, the rest of the Mets starters have been a bit suspect. They've got to pitch better in the playoffs to give Eddy a chance to advance. Perez and Maine have not had the best of seasons. Even Billy Wagner has been a bit shaky in save situations, although he's been known to show up in big games.
The Mets bats are what got them to the postseason and they are where the fate of the team lies. If they hit well, they have a chance to win. If not, then it's up to the starters who may struggle. David Wright had a heckuva year along with Endy Chavez and Jose Reyes. Castillo also was solid. Him and Chavez are a nightmare on the basepaths, and could be the difference in a tight series. The Mets do it with consistency, not power.
GURU'S PREDICTION
------------------------
This is a very hard series for the Guru to predict. Both teams are similar in that they have great hitting. Although, the Astros have a big advantage in starting pitching. It's hard to pick against either team, which is why I'm not making a pick.....
....
....
....
Okay okay!! The Guru thinks Eddy is the NL Champ and will be until someone takes it away from him. But how can anyone pick against the Astros pitching staff? No one is possibly that naive, are they? Well if someone is, it's the Guru! He has a sneaky suspicion Eddy's knack for laying bunts and wreaking havoc on the base paths will help him in a short series against the best pitching staff in the majors. The Guru likes the experience of the NL Champ.
Stay tuned for AL Predictions tomorrow! |

The Guru has returned just in time for the postseason! Today we will preview the NL Playoffs and then tomorrow we will tackle the AL. Now that the NL playoff picture has cleared up with a Dodgers victory, lets get down to business. Ohhhhhh how the Guru loves playoff time!
---------------------
[GIANTS v. DODGERS]
As if this series needs any explanation. Giants v. Dodgers is one of the most bitter rivalries in all of baseball and has been for quite some time. That's enough for any fan to watch..right? What's that you say....AND the two coaches on each side are bitter rivals? THAT'S what makes this series even sweeter. Bondz and Coachbrown have a storied rivalry and this will only add history to the large book of playoff lore.
Verlander and Cain have had huge years for the Giants. Plus they added former Indians ace Fausto Carmona who has playoff experience (not to mention a filthy sinker). Gonna be tough for anyone to hit off those guys. Brian Wilson is usually lights out in the 9th.
Randy Winn has probably been the Giants most consistent regular at the plate. Most of the stars struggled this season which is why the Giants are predominantly known as a pitching team. Zimmerman banged out nine dingers which gave the Giants much needed pop.
Andy Pettite clinched a playoff spot for the Dodgers and in the process proved why he's probably the top pitcher in the NL right now. Francis is not far behind but Burnett and Wainwright are a step below. Broxton is LITERALLY lights out! No one hits off that guy. If the Dodgers lead in the 9th, goodnight.
The Dodgers really struggled at the plate this year, which is evidenced by the fact it took them until the final day of the season to clinch a playoff spot. Martin, Fukudome, Garciappara, and Cano all had pop at the plate. If the Dodgers hit like they did in the regular season, they will have problems against the Giants superb staff.
GURU'S PREDICTION
-----------------------
Both teams have veteran leadership and playoff experience. Both have super pitching and suspect hitting. The Guru thinks the Giants staff is too much and they have just enough at the plate. Guru sees Dodgers hitters struggling mightily. If the Dodgers have any hope, it rests with Pettite. |

Andy Pettitte knew the entire LA Dodger's organization rested on that sweet left arm he poccesses. 1 game play in for 4th and final spot in the powerhouse N.L playoff scene. Pettitte took the mound in one of the biggest games of his life, responsible for validating the Dodger season with CoachBrown at the helm, the trades. At 13-14 with all kinds of problems with latest mod. Pettitte told his team..."get me a run or two". Byrnes connects on a Harden slider top of the 3rd with Betencourt on, for 2-0 LA lead. Top of the 4th Martin smacks a Harden offering over the leftfield wall for 3-0 Dodger advantage! Pettitte throws a 7 gutchecking gem, while scattering 7 hits for the W. Slaten and Broxton 10th save of the season sends LA to the big dance! CoachBrown signs 4.5 million extention in locker room.
